Wahoo

Acanthocybium solandri

Among the fastest fish in the ocean, wahoo hit high-speed trolled lures near drop-offs and current breaks.

Wahoo are long, slender, steel-blue fish marked with vivid cobalt vertical bars, a pointed snout, and a mouth lined with razor-sharp teeth. Shaped like a torpedo, they count among the fastest fish in the ocean.

They occupy warm offshore waters worldwide, frequently holding near reefs, deep ledges, floating objects, and sharp current lines.

How anglers target them

Solitary or loosely grouped, wahoo are ambush predators that strike with explosive speed. High-speed trolling with heavy weighted lures, planers, and wire leaders is a leading method, since their teeth shear through monofilament instantly. Rigged ballyhoo, bonito strips, and deep-diving plugs also produce. On the hook a wahoo unleashes a scorching first run that can nearly empty a reel before it settles. Their firm white flesh makes them highly prized at the table.
